Abstract


Heritage conservation has become an issue in the development of any item from the
past. This also happens at times when the train-stations of the colonial period are going to be
revitalized with new commercial facilities—the trend adopted by PT KAI who manages the
railway assets. Taking case on Purwosari Railway Station of Surakarta, the study is carried
out to reveal a sound bases for the conservation efforts. It takes the Burra Charter approach in
revealing the cultural significance of the place and formulating the conservation policy in
order to conclude the appropriate planning and design guidelines. Analysis has been
conducted in descriptive and prescriptive manner. The result states the need to conserve the
asset and confirms any new development effort as long as it is conservation-oriented and
heritage-friendly.
