Abstract

The aim of this research is to study the effect of welding tool tilt in friction stir welding (FSW) process on the mechanical properties and micro structural of weld joint on aluminium sheet 5083. FSW process used milling machine and the welding tool material is Bohler K100 with hardness 59HRc.

This welding process had rotation of spindle 1125 rpm, welding rate 30mm/minute, and depth of plunge 3,9 mm. The welding toolt tilt were varied in 1°, 2°, 3° and 4°. The specimens were tested for tensile test, bending test, hardness test, macro and micro photograph. The results shows that the highest tensile strength (312.5MPa) occurs on the tool tilt angle of 3°. The highest buckling strength for face bending (655.1MPa) and root bending (651.8MPa) occurs on the tool tilt angle of 2°. The retreating side on average has a higher hardness than the advancing side. Until tool tilt angle until 3°, the tensile strength increases and after that the tensile strength decreases. However, the buckling strength has the highest value at the tilt angle 2°. On the micro photograph, the higher value of tool tilt angle, the bigger at the grain size in HAZ area. Unfortunetelly, the tilt angle does not influence to grain size in nugget area.
