STUDI KONSERVASI MASJID AGUNG KRATON SURAKARTA SEBAGAI MONUMEN PERADABAN ISLAM MASA LALU

Abstract


The Great Mosque of Surakarta is one of the Crown Mosques, erected in 1750s, at
about the same time with the construction of the Keraton. It received great attention from the
ruling Kings for their role as religion leaders, that it was built in phases to be an impressive
building. Having regards to its history, exploration on spatial and physical condition reveals
delineation for conservation and building elements to be preserved. It carries high physical
quality and archaeological values. While, study on the present time activities indicates a
number of functions that have to be conserved. The conservation is to be in line with its main
function as a place for Islamic worship. New functions should not give threats to its spatial and
physical images. Besides, the conservation efforts should put it forward to be a living
monument of Islamic civilization of the past.
