Abstract

Friendly urban design means friendly to people and the environment. Making a city
more accessible for pedestrians is an effort to make the city more human and friendly.
Pedestrian’s comfort is not only focused on walking-streets and citywalks, but also on other
pedestrian facilities like sidewalks and crossings. Number of pedestrians will increase if city
public transport better. People would like to walk if sidewalks and crossings are comfortable
and safe. Pedestrian facilities at streets-junctions should be planed and designed carefully to
avoid accident. This study attempts to evaluate pedestrian facilities at several junctions in
Surakarta. Principles of accessible design for pedestrian and the disabled are reviewed from
literature and empirical studies. Based on the principles, the junctions are examined. This
paper concludes that pedestrian comfort and safety at the most of the junctions in Surakarta
are neglected. More clear and detailed guidelines and examples must be produced and
socialized.
