PERKEMBANGAN SISTEM PERKOTAAN SURAKARTA DAN SEKITARNYA PADA PERIODE 1993-2003

Abstract

Surakarta as a growth center in the province of Central Java interacts with numbers
of cities and forms a system of cities. During the period of 1993-2003, the primacy level of
Surakarta in this urban system was constantly growing. This paper examines the growth of
Surakarta Urban System by describing the progress made by each member of the system and
the system itself as a whole. Statistics taken form the Census and Intercensal Survey showed
countinous domination of Surakarta. The role showed by Surakarta was so complex so that it
became impossible for the other cities in the system to compete. The situation of overbounded
and primacy has some implications that indeed need intervention to ensure just, fair and
sustainable development of the system
