Abstract


This paper discusses the opportunities and challenges of implementing Eco-
Sanitation Communal sanitation developmet in the city of Surakarta. Surakarta city with
an area of 44.03 km2, is the most populous city in Central Java Province. Population density
of approximately 11 370 people/km2. An estimated 82,074 people use communal sanitation
facilities. Many of Communal sanitary conditions are not qualified to endanger
public health and reduce the environmental quality of settlements. Eco-sanitation approach is
expected to answer problems of existing Communal Sanitation in Surakarta
