TELAAH TERHADAP PERSEPSI PENGGUNA MASJID PKU MUHAMMADIYAH SURAKARTA

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to get answers from problems about: have symbols of
mosque’s architecture which definitely and become style of mosque’s architecture at Java been
represented in the architectural design of PKU Muhammadiyah Surakarta Mosque. The plan
of this research begin from a explanation about symbols in the architecture. Special
characteristics from physical form of architectural can be made by symbols on the
architecture. Harry Launce Garnham stated, if meaning or symbol were components of identity
to supported ‘semangat tempat’ (spirit of place) and ‘jiwa tempat’ (sense of place). Also stated
by him, if culture would influence characteristics and physical appearance from a certain
place (Garnham, 1985 : 7). So, if symbols on the architecture become definite on a certain
culture, then those symbols can be stated as architecture style. On Indonesia, especially at
Java, symbols of mosque’s architecture develop based from two styles. For example, Demak
Mosque and Kudus Mosque are the fusion between Middle East Mosque’s architecture and
Hindi’s architecture; whereas Syuhada Mosque on the Yogyakarta just has characteristics of
Middle East’s architecture. But, symbols that have been definite on the mosque’s architecture
at Java, isn’t be represented on the architecture of PKU Muhammadiyah Surakarta Mosque.
Appear violations, until the character of mosque building become ‘disappear’. Violations of
mosque’s design from symbols of mosque’s architecture that have been definite at Java, cause
that mosque be felt ‘strange’.
