Abstract


Abstract : Desalination unit based on heat pump with humidification and dehumidification processes was one of the heat pump applications system, with addition of a humidifier, sprinkler and evaporator (dehumidifier) that integrated in a unit. In this unit, evaporator of heat pump was used for dehumidification process which would produce fresh water from the air that has been humidified in the humidifier with the spray of sea water through the sprinkler. The addition of electric air heater was used to vary the inlet air temperature to the humidifier on this system. In this research was examine the effect of air temperature on the performance of desalination unit based on heat pump with using humidification and dehumidification processes. In this research the air temperature was varied at 35oC, 45oC, 55oC and 65oC, sea water temperature was conditioned at a constant temperature of 35oC, and ambient temperature was kept constant. Compressor was operated at a constant rotation of 1,200 rpm, the sea water volumetric flow rate was kept at 300 l/h, and sea water in this system was recirculated. The result of this research showed that the volume of fresh water production increase with increasing the inlet air temperature to the humidifier on this desalination unit.
