PERAN DAN FUNGSI ARSITEKTUR ATAP PADA BANGUNAN STUDI KASUS PADA BEBERAPA BANGUNAN DI SURAKARTA

Abstract

The development of livelihood recently requires proper facilities. Architecture is no
longer a matter of space, but it is more complex that also deals with social, economic and
culture of the society. Progress on the construction and building material technology has made
way for the development of architectural form, particularly the roof architecture. It is not
merely a shield from external environment, but also has a great influence in shaping the
façade of buildings, districts, or even towns. The aims of the research are, in general, to get the
real picture of the implementation of roof architecture on buildings in Surakarta region and, in
particular, to extract the type of roof architecture form in the region. The research utilizes
purposive random sampling for selecting samples, and documentation and observation for
data collecting. The method for analysis is descriptive-qualitative. The research concludes that
apart from its function as shelters, roof architecture also contributes to the value and
character of buildings, so that it should be carefully determined in any newly design buildings.
