TEKTONIKA ARSITEKTUR GEREJA MARIA ASSUMPTA KLATEN

Abstract

The works of the late YB Mangunwijaya are highly characterized with tectonics
structure. Tectonics issues were solved with comprehension on building statics technique and
structural linkage articulation. In creating architectural works, building materials, with all
limitation and potential in leading forces, were empathized on their characteristics. As a
master builder, Mangunwijaya was totally involved in the design and construction phases of
Maria Asssumpta Church. To cope with building statics, structural system was examined in
relation with the nature and character of its materials, so as to verify the integrity of the
structure as well as to create images of the space atmosphere. Type of structure chosen,
materials used, and detailed solution on articulated joints are interesting instance of the
tectonic of the church. These have been emerged by Mangunwijaya for his acknowledgement
to the character of building materials.
