Abstract


The construction of houses in small cluster (less than 25 units) has been a popular
solution of supplying the need of public housing over the last 10 years. This kinds of urban
development is known as Leap-frog Development. This research has an aim to observe the
influences of those phenomenon to the surrounding environment.
Morphology is one of important aspects of an observation method which is commonly
applied in conducting such research. Taking case on Desa Malangjiwan west of the Surakarta,
the analysis was focused on three main factors, namely : the pattern of road, drainage ; land
useng ; and composition of buildings/houses.
The results of research indicates two important conclusions. Firstly, some positive
influences were the improvement of vitality and intensity the nearest roads; increasing the
development various kinds of building in the nearby area including shop-houses, offices,
trading companies and improvement of the telecommunication system. Secondly, the negative
influences, such as traffic jam often occur at the intersection between the main entrance of
area with the main road; uncontrolled-development area especially conversing the fertile farm
area into various built-up areas.
The most important recommendation is that developer, local government and local
community have to discuss properly during the planning process of the construction of houses
in small group to formulate the legislation for stimulating a synergic interaction in various
aspects between the new group of houses and its environment.
