Abstract

The nature of the composite sandwich is affected by the nature of the core, skin properties and bond formed between the core and the skin. The quality of the bond depends on the type of adhesive used to bind between the skin and core. That, the study of adhesive that is capable of producing the best mechanical strength needs to be done. This research is focused to study the effect of adhesive on the bending strength of the composite sandwich-rHDPEcantula. Adhesive used in this study is epoxy (versamid), chloroprene (aica-aibon) and cyanoacrylate (alteco). Skin is made of powder recycled- High Density Polyethylene (rHDPE), while the core is made of fiber cantula and rHDPE. The process of making skins and cores made using a hot press. The process parameters used include a process temperature of 170ºC, holding time 15 minutes and the pressing pressure of 50 bar. Dimensions and bending testing refers to ASTM C 393. The results showed that variations in adhesive effect on the bending strength of the composite sandwich-rHDPEcantula. The highest bending strength of 25.70 MPa was obtained with cyanoacrylate adhesive (alteco). Mean while, the value achieved at the lowest power chloroprene adhesive (aica-aibon) with a value of 7.09 MPa bending strength.
