Abstract

This research aim to modified the 10 kW AC generator as a dynamometer. The function of dynamometer is to determine the engine performance characteristics that include break power, BSFC, BMEP, and thermal efficiency. The AC generator was modified with a power supply circuit in order to control the dynamometer’s load. Viar Super X 100 cc 4 strokes 1 cylinder engine in standard conditions was tested with the 10 kW AC generator (generator type dynamometer) at 1500 rpm. The tests was carried out in conditions of 2600 W maximum lamp load with 1, 2 and 3 kg dynamometer’s load at 2500, 3000, 4000, 5000 and 6000 engine rotational speed for each load. The results of this research showed that DC electric power  is decreased from 7.8VA to 4 VA for 1 kg load, 22 VA to 9.6 VA for 2 kg load and 61.2 VA to 22 VA for 3kg dynamometer’s load as the engine rotational speed increased. The break power is increased from 0.22 kW to 1.927 kW and thermal efficiency is increased from 5.86% to 21.17% as the engine rotational speed and dynamometer’s load increased. The value of BSFC is decreased from 1.39 kg/kW.h to 0.386 kg/kW.h as the break power increased.
