Abstract

Pack carburizing is one of the processes used to increase the hardness of low carbon steel. This method had widely used to increase the mechanical properties of low carbon steel that is needed to be hard on the surface but still tough inside it. This experiment has investigated effect of BaCO3, Na2CO3 and CaCO3 as energizer on hardness and microstructure of carburized hoe. The carburizing media used in this experiment is coconut shell charcoal. Sample were carburized at 980 oC in carburizing compound containing coconut shell charcoal (60%) and energizer material (40%). The results obtained showed that carburizing process increases the hardness of hoe. The highest hardness number is 686 HV on the surface, and decrease along hoe’s depth. Coconut shell charcoal combined with BaCO3 gives the deepest hardening on the carburized hoe.
